Many times there is confusion between #14 self tapping sheet metal screws and lag screws or wood screws.
Sometimes, customers will ask for the wrong screw simply because of the application in which they are being used. A customer will ask for a lag screw or wood screw because they are going to use that screw in wood. However, what they really want is actually a self tapping sheet metal screw. An easy way to avoid getting the wrong part is to answer a few simple questions about the screw you want: a) is the screw fully threaded? A self tapping sheet metal screw will be fully threaded whereas a wood screw or lag screw will have a significant shank beneath the head. B) does the hex head have a small lip (washer) around the head? a wood screw or a lag screw will have a hex head with no attached washer. If the answer to both these questions is yes, you will be wanting a #14 sheet metal screw and not a lag screw
