There are more screws than just tek screws and zip screws!  The good news is that there is a self tapping screw for almost every job or material you are using: 

Board screw. This is designed specifically for wood or wood-type materials such as MDF or fibre board. They are self-tapping in as much as they will tap their own threads and do not need to be used with a pre threaded insert. It has a sharp point for easy starting and holds a grip within the wood so it will not slip.

Exterior screw. This is treated with an anti-rust coating to prevent corrosion or rust and is ideal for decking, joists or fences.  read more...

Tek screws, which are self tapping fasteners, have a very small carving at the end of its tip called a drill bit. This particular product is very popular in a number of carpentry projects since it is basically a self threading product cutting back on the number of steps necessary to complete projects. Carpenters use them for screwing metal into wood or even screwing metal into metal depending on the thickness of the material.
